Last week, the historic Cinemanía venue in Plaza Loreto—one of Mexico City’s most emblematic art cinemas—played host to a landmark event for Latin America's postproduction and cinematography community. In an exciting in-person appearance, Dado Valentic, one of the most influential color scientists in Hollywood and founder of Colourlab Ai, delivered a visionary presentation that bridged the worlds of color science, artificial intelligence, and cinematic aesthetics.
Titled Dado Valentic en CDMX, the event brought together a packed audience of cinematographers, colorists, producers, and post supervisors for a deep dive into the technology behind Filmlab Ai—a groundbreaking film emulation tool that reconstructs the photochemical look of motion picture film using subpixel analysis, AI-driven vector modeling, and advanced modulation techniques. More than just an introduction to new software, Valentic’s presentation invited attendees into the scientific and philosophical underpinnings of texture, perception, and chaos theory in moving images.
In one of the evening’s most anticipated moments, Valentic formally introduced Filmlab Ai Live, a new hardware solution designed to bring real-time, SDI-based film emulation to on-set monitoring. The device generated significant excitement among attendees, promising a workflow where filmic texture can be visualized live on set—reducing the creative gap between principal photography and final color.
FilmLab Ai Live will soon be made available for production use in Mexico and Latin America through CAMARENA Color & Motion, a boutique color grading studio in Mexico City co-founded by Judith Ostria and Luis Hernández de la Peña, who also serves as a collaborator at Colourlab Ai and played a key role in organizing the event.
Co-hosted by Llamado Rentals, HDLabs México, Gaffer Rentals, Hollyland, and CAMARENA, the evening underscored the growing global relevance of Mexico’s creative industry. As Valentic remarked during the presentation, the energy and momentum of Mexico City’s production scene may well rival, or even surpass, that of Los Angeles today.
Beyond its technical insights, the event served as a celebration of community, collaboration, and a shared passion for the future of cinematic imagery. For attendees, it was not only a unique opportunity to engage directly with one of the most respected voices in image science—but also a glimpse at the future of filmmaking, where real-time texture, AI, and intuitive tools redefine how we craft visual storytelling.
